While the Used Book Sale is FOL's principal fund raiser, we also depend on membership dues and contributions in the form of memorials, bequests or gifts to further the work of the organization: financial support for our fine library system. Gifts may be made directly to the organization or through the East Tennessee Foundation, which manages the Friends' endowment. Since its inception in 2007, the Knox County Public Library Foundation, a non-profit entity begun by Friends of the Library, has been able to accept large donations from those who wish to contribute financially to the library. The Library Foundation's mission statement is:
Because a strong public library is a necessity for a healthy and vital community, we established the Knox County Public Library Foundation. The foundation will collect, invest, and distribute funds donated for the improvement of the Knox County Library.
